Some old age pension plans are age- or contribution-based; others rely on retirement income (from employer-sponsored pension plans, personal savings, and work pay).

OAP Canada

You are entitled to Old Age Security (OAS), often known as OAP, a monthly stipend if you are 65 years of age or older. Your length of Canadian residency determines the bulk of your old age pension. The GOC will send you a letter letting you know that you are eligible to receive the old age pension.

In the month following your 64th birthday, if you haven’t received a letter on the OAP pension, contact Service Canada to see whether you need to submit an OAP Canada 2023 application. If your OAP Canada application 2023 is approved, you will need to fulfill a few conditions to be eligible for old age benefits. These include being 65 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen or lawful resident, and having been a resident of the nation for a minimum of ten years after turning eighteen.

If you have resided in Canada for 40 years, beginning at the age of 18, you are eligible for the full amount of the old age pension. If you have not resided in Canada for at least 40 years and have met the minimum residency requirements of 10 years, you may be eligible for a partial old age pension payment in 2023.

Even if none of these circumstances apply to you, you might still be qualified for an OAS pension, a pension from another country, or a pension from both Canada and the other country if you meet the following requirements:

Old age pension increase in 2023-24

In order to modify the Old Age Pension payments in Canada, changes in the COL are measured using the CPI. If the cost of living decreases, your payments will not decrease; instead, they may increase to reflect inflation. The Old Age Pension payment modifications function in a slightly different way. Your CPP monthly payout will increase in January if the COL rises.

However, OAP benefits are reviewed and assessed annually in January, April, July, and October to ensure that they sufficiently take into consideration increased living costs. Because to CPI changes, old age pension payouts increased by 0.5% in April compared to the previous quarter. CPP benefits increased 6.3% in 2023 to account for growing living costs.

When is the Next Payment for OAP Canada

You can receive your first payment in the month after turning 65. Taxes apply to the old age pension payment. The OAP will increase monthly payments based on the Consumer Price Index, and the pension is reviewed in January, April, July, and October to take changes in living expenditures into consideration.

If living expenses go down, the amount of OAP payments won’t be decreased. If you are already over 65, you may be eligible for an OAP Canada payment for a maximum of 11 months from the day your application was filed. As of July 2022, the old age pension has been permanently increased by 10% for seniors who are 75 years of age or older.
