What is Ireland Fuel Allowance?
The “fuel allowance” is provided to help cover winter heating expenses for a household. This allowance is typically designated for one person in a home and spans from late September to early April. The latest Fuel Allowance season commenced on Monday, September 25, 2023, and the 28-week payment period concludes on April 5, 2024.
The Fuel Allowance is now at €33 per week, offering flexibility with two payment options: weekly or in two lump sum installments. The first lump sum installment was paid in September 2023, followed by the second in January 2024.
For many households, the Fuel Allowance is a crucial support throughout winter, assisting hundreds of thousands in managing their heating expenses.
Ireland Fuel Allowance Budget
Minister Humphreys secured funding for the Fuel Allowance program’s largest-ever expansion and introduced a new means test for individuals over 70 in Budget 2023.
Normally, the State allocates approximately €240 million annually for the Winter Fuel Allowance, benefiting around 365,000 families.
Ministers Michael McGrath and Paschal Donohoe recently unveiled a €14 billion budget plan for the upcoming year. As part of this plan, recipients of the fuel allowance will now receive a lump sum payment of €300.
Ireland Fuel Allowance Payment Dates
Starting the last week of September 2023, your weekly Fuel Allowance Payments will coincide with your regular weekly pension or benefit, unless you’ve opted for a single lump sum payment.
The final weekly fuel allowance payment is scheduled for the second week of April 2024. Instead of receiving weekly payments, those applying for fuel allowance may have the option to receive it in two lump sum installments.
The initial lump sum of €462 should have been processed in the last week of September 2023, while the second lump sum of €462 (equivalent to 14 weeks at €33 per week) is slated for payment in the first week of January 2024.
Ireland Fuel Allowance Eligibility
If you’re an Irish citizen living alone, with a spouse, or dependent children, you can qualify for Fuel Allowance. Meeting a means test and receiving a qualifying payment is necessary, unless you’re 70 years or older. However, if your accommodation covers all heating costs, you won’t be eligible for Fuel Allowance.
The Department of Social Protection (DSP) assesses all your income sources during a means test. To pass the means test for fuel allowance, your gross weekly income must be below a specific threshold. Typically, receiving a qualified social assistance payment, which is means-tested, qualifies you for the fuel allowance means test.
If you’re 70 years or older, you don’t need a qualifying payment to be eligible for Fuel Allowance. Social welfare payments are determined either by means-testing or based on your PRSI contributions (social insurance payments).
Ireland Fuel Allowance Amount
The current Fuel Allowance rate is €33 per week, totaling €924 over the 28-week period in 2023–2024. You can receive the allowance weekly or in two equal payments. If you receive social welfare benefits, your fuel allowance is included in your weekly paycheck.
For those not on social welfare, you can collect your Fuel Allowance at your local post office or have it deposited directly into your bank account.
It’s important to note that retroactive applications won’t be accepted after the season begins. If your circumstances remain the same and you continue to receive social assistance payments, you’re not required to reapply for Fuel Allowance annually.
