Eligibility Criteria for KTET
To apply for the Kerala Teachers Eligibility Test (KTET), candidates need to meet specific educational qualifications tailored to the level they want to teach.
For Category 1, which covers Lower Primary classes, applicants must have completed Higher Secondary or its equivalent with at least 45% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education. Alternatively, they can have Higher Secondary with 50% marks and either a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education).
Category 2, for Upper Primary classes, requires candidates to hold a B.A, B.Sc., or B.Com degree along with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or a Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) from the Government of Kerala or its equivalent. Alternatively, they can possess a degree with at least 45% marks and a one-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.), or Higher Secondary with 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor in The four-year BA/B.Sc.Ed or B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed programs, or elementary education (B.El.Ed.).
For Category 3, for High School classes, candidates need a BA/BSc/BCom degree with at least 45% marks and a B.Ed. Additionally, they should have a degree in the subject they want to teach, or an M.Sc. Ed. in certain subjects with at least 50% marks, or an education degree in life sciences with a minimum of 50% marks from specific institutes.
Lastly, Category 4 includes Physical Education teachers (up to High School level), Specialist teachers, and Language teachers teaching Arabic, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu up to Upper Primary level. Eligibility criteria for this category are specified in Chapter XXXI of the Kerala Education Act and Rules.
Candidates belonging to SC/ST and differently-abled categories receive relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks for all categories.
