SSS Disability Benefit 2024
Living with a chronic illness or injury poses numerous challenges. Not only do physical limitations impact daily life, but the inability to work and sustain oneself adds to the difficulty. The SSS Disability benefit steps in when financial resources fall short for covering hospital expenses, rehabilitation, and building a fresh start.
For individuals in the Philippines of working age with disabilities, the Social Security Administration (SSS) provides a monthly transfer to ease the financial burden. Eligibility for the disability benefit requires a minimum of one month’s SSS payment prior to the semester of disability. The monthly pension amount is determined based on years of service and contributions.
The document outlines the criteria you need to meet to qualify for the SSS disability benefit program in the Philippines.
Understanding SSS Disability Benefit
If you find yourself completely or partially permanently unable to work due to incapacity, the SSS offers a monetary benefit. This can be in the form of a one-time lump sum payment or a monthly pension, depending on the amount of your monthly SSS contributions.
There are two types of disability benefits:
- Monthly Payment: If you’ve made at least 36 monthly SSS contributions before the semester of disability, you qualify for a monthly disability pension.
- Lump-sum Payment: This is for those with disability periods of less than a year or who have made less than 36 monthly payments before the semester of disability.
For individuals completely disabled with fewer than 36 months of contributions, the lump sum is the monthly pension multiplied by the number of SSS monthly contributions, or 12 times, whichever is higher.

Partially disabled individuals with fewer than 36 months of contributions receive the monthly pension times the number of monthly payments, multiplied by the disability percentage, or the monthly pension times 12 times the disability percentage, whichever is higher.
Who Qualifies for SSS Disability Benefit?
To qualify for a disability pension, one must have made at least thirty-six monthly payments before the disability semester. Those with contributions totaling fewer than thirty-six each month receive a lump sum payment.
SSS disability benefit applicants should be members dealing with persistent impairments, whether full or partial. SSS covers various illnesses and impairments falling into the following categories:
- Partially Disabled:
- Complete and permanent loss of function or use of specific body parts, allowing the person to work in a paid capacity.
- Absolute Permanent Disability:
- Total loss of vision in both eyes, loss of two limbs at or above ankles or wrists, permanent total paralysis of two limbs, brain damage leading to irreversible insanity or imbecility, and other circumstances as determined by the SSS.
A disability pension is provided on a lifelong, monthly basis to fully and permanently handicapped SSS members. However, if an individual recovers or resumes work, SSS discontinues the pension.
SSS Disability Benefit Amount
The amount of your monthly pension from SSS is determined by your years of membership and total payments made before the disability semester. Lifetime monthly pensions are exclusive to those fully and permanently incapacitated.
For members with less than ten credited years of service (CYS), the monthly pension is P1,000; for those with at least ten CYS, it’s P1,200; and for those with twenty or more CYS, it’s P2,400. Eligible members also receive a monthly Supplemental Allowance of P500 on top of their SS Disability Pension.
Starting January 2017, an additional bonus of P1,000 is included. SSS employs various formulas to calculate lump sum payments for both fully and partially incapacitated members.
