Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro to get revamped MagSafe, Under-Display Face ID delayed

Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro to get revamped MagSafe, Under-Display Face ID delayed

For the first time since the iPhone 12’s introduction of the magnetic accessory connector, MagSafe is apparently undergoing significant changes for the iPhone 16. However, it looks that the much anticipated iPhone with a smaller punch-hole has been postponed once more, as Face ID won’t be placed beneath the panel in 2019 either.

Images (posted below) purportedly show dummies of the entire Apple iPhone 16 series, including the location and size of the magnets needed for MagSafe. These images were recently published by the French website Webseite ShopSystem.

A direct comparison of the magnetic ring with an iPhone 15 Pro dummy reveals a significant reduction in thickness. Since the ring’s inner diameter and position don’t seem to have changed much, it is safe to assume that this adjustment won’t have an impact on the compatibility of the current MagSafe and Qi2 accessories. This change would mainly be made to free up space in the smartphone housing, which could then be used for other purposes, like accommodating the three of the four models’ slightly larger batteries.

In the meantime, Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO and analyst Ross Young offers a preview of what’s to come for the iPhone. He says that although the much-anticipated under-display Face ID module will be further delayed, all four models will finally get a 120 Hz OLED display next year. Although this was first anticipated for the iPhone 16 Pro, the updated roadmap only lists the iPhone 17 Pro as receiving it.
